Integer Review: HIKE THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL

1Appalachian Trail Project

Review Integer operations with this amazing review! Students have fun reviewing integer operations while learning about the famous Appalachian Trail in the Eastern United States.

What is the Appalachian Trail?

This hiking trail of more than 2000 miles, and covering 14 states, is one of the most famous hiking trails in the world. “Through hikers” backpack this trail from beginning to end in one trip that can take several months.  Starting in either Mt. Katahdin, Maine,  or North Georgia,  hikers will see some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

Thematic Unit on Integers

Students will learn all about this iconic trail by reading about different sections of the trail, purchasing supplies, choosing their own adventure, keeping a journal, and importing Google images of the trail.   They will solve integer problems along the way in order to earn more money for their trip.

Students will solve integer problems by moving red and yellow integer chips on a slide, and removing zero pairs.  They will also use digital number lines.   The red and yellow number lines can be moved to show the integer addition, and be shortened or lengthened easily to show their addition.   Students will solve problems using the rules of integer addition, subtract by “adding the opposite”, solve mixed addition and subtraction, and complete their review with multiplying and dividing integers.   Every correct answer will result in more $$ for their trip.

Choose your own trail adventure

In each section of the trail, they will be asked to choose between two different experiences.  When they choose their adventure, they will click on a tent icon, that will take them to a slide describing what happens to them along the trail.    A bear may ransack their camp during the night,  they may lose their trail map, or be surprised with a letter from home containing additional funds!  Students will complete a journal for each section of the trail, and import Google images of each state to display as photos on a slide.

After completing this project, students will have a more solid understanding of integer operations, and be inspired to hike the trails of the Eastern U.S. and beyond!
