Summer School Math Review for Middle School

by | Jun 16, 2021 | Lessons

Summer School in 2021 is critical for preparing our School Students for the coming school year!   This past year was online for many schools, and the challenge of engaging students from home was immense.  Fortunately, the students who showed up to our Zoom classes, and did the work we assigned, did very well.  However, that number was dismal this past year.   Many students were home alone, or surrounded by noise, family members, and pets.  Conditions were not ideal, but we did the best we could given the fact that we had virtually no preparation for this unprecedented school year.

Back to In-Person Learning

Now that school has ended, summer school in the summer of 2021, will be critical in getting these students back where they need to be.  Most schools this summer, are back to in-person learning.   We can be there in person, making sure they understand, and give them the encouragement they need.  Our teachers are up to the challenge!

Hike the Appalachian Trail

Summer school should be academically challenging, but also fun.   Teachers are reaching out to their colleagues, and looking for ways to review, that engage the students.   Let them review integers by hiking the Appalachian Trail, earning $ by solving integer problems, and overcoming many challenges along the trail.    They will budget their money, buy supplies, keep a journal, and visit historic sites on this 2000+ mile hiking trail.

Earn Their Way to the Summer Olympics

They can also choose an Olympic event and compete at qualifying meets around the world, to earn their way to the Summer Olympics.   Teachers can choose 6th, 7th, or 8th grade Math standards to review.   As they solve math problems, students will earn a ticket on a plane, train, bus, or oceanliner to travel to their next event.  Los Angeles, Rio, Capetown, Cairo, Sydney, Tokyo, Paris, and Chicago are all destinations along their journey.  They will keep track of their progress on a map, do a google search about each city, keep a journal, and import pictures of each city.  If you’re teaching students from all three grade levels, you can purchase a bundle that includes all three projects.

Let’s Make Learning Fun this Summer

Most teachers I know love to add fun projects to their curriculum, but the pressure of teaching the standards make it difficult to find the time.   Summer School is the perfect time to introduce students to our favorite projects.   Learning should be fun.   Let’s make this summer memorable for students who have missed so much this past year.   And at the same time, get them up to speed for the return of classes in the fall.
