Practice Fun Google Skills!

Are you ready for the new school year?  Are your students familiar with the digital skills they will need in the future?

WHAT DO YOUR STUDENTS KNOW?

There are so many fun tools that students can learn to enhance their digital skills.  Do they know how to insert different shapes, change the color, add a border, or change the size?  Can they insert an image in a slide from Google images or from images on their computer?  Do they know how to size an image and move it around a slide?  Can they create arrows and point them in different directions?  Can they type with different fonts, colors, and sizes?

Some of your students may be equipped with these skills and many more.   Others many be sorely lacking.  To prepare them for the future, we need to make sure they are up to speed.  Once students are familiar and comfortable with these basic skills, they will be more confident, and ready to move on to more complicated tasks.

WHAT SKILLS DO WE NEED TO FOCUS ON, AND WHY?

It has been increasingly apparent that digital skills are necessary for student success alongside math and literacy.  This life skill is becoming increasingly important, not just for academics, but for socialization and career readiness.  We need to make sure students are not slowed in their academic progress because they lack digital skills.  Assessments are often performed digitally and  educators want to make sure students are comfortable in their computer skills and not struggling just to figure out how to use the platform.

SOCIALIZATION SKILLS

More and more socialization is done online on social media sites.  Students need to be able to know how to navigate these sites and have an equal skill level with their peers.  They need to learn about computer safety and how to handle online bullying.  It’s also important that all students have the same opportunity to use and master these skills.  Inequity in computer access can greatly impact students’ abilities and future success.

TRY A FUN DIGITAL LESSON

Begin your school year addressing these concerns with a fun, engaging, digital lesson.  “Practice Your Google Digital Skills” is a  digital lesson that requires students to insert different shapes, fill them with different colors, and add borders of different sizes.  They will be asked to insert Google Images and size them to fit on a Google slide.  Arrows are inserted into a slide, and students must rotate them different directions, change their width and length and color them with the “fill color” feature of Google Slides.  On another slide, students must type a paragraph about a favorite activity, using different fonts, type size and colors.  And finally, they learn to insert special characters and mathematical symbols.   If you’d like to start the school year with an idea where your students digital skills lie, try this lesson that will give you some real information about their digital skills with several enjoyable tasks.
