Play Classroom Bingo – Digitally!

Did you know?

“Bingo” is nearly 500 years old. It began in Italy around 1530, and was originally called “Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia”. In the 1770’s, “Le Lotto” was introduced in France, and was played by wealthy Frenchmen. The Germans had a version of the game for children to help students learn math, history, and other subjects. In the United States, the game was originally called “Beano” because they used beans to mark the cards. If someone had 5 in a row, they yelled “Beano”. When a New York toy salesman witnessed a game in which an excited player yelled “Bingo” instead of “Beano”, the name of the game was changed.

Bingo Today

Bingo is now regaining popularity as the game moves online. Today, seniors and the disabled can stay connected with their care centers while they are confined to the home. My own son, disabled in a car accident, plays online Zoom Bingo every Friday to stay connected to his disabled peers, while his center is currently closed.

Digital Bingo Games

I have created several digital Bingo Games which are sold in my 2 online stores. A slide deck has 26 different Bingo Boards for students to choose from. Extra boards can easily be created by simply duplicating a slide. Students can be given editing rights and can scroll throught the colored slides to choose the board they want. In my classroom, I have students claim a board by double-clicking on a Bingo chip, and typing their name. This claims the board so other students know it’s not available, and they must search for another board. As I call out math problems, students find the solution on their board and drag and drop a bingo chip onto the answer. If they get 5 in a row, they either unmute and call out “Bingo”, or type Bingo in the chat box. When the game is over, they have an easy clean-up. Just click repeatedly on the undo arrow, and the chips magically move right back into place. If we play again, students clean up their boards and have one minute to scroll through the slides and find a new board.
