Halloween Math – Creative teaching in the Month of October

by | Oct 7, 2021 | Lessons

Halloween is a favorite among children, and what better way to spice up a math lesson than to add a scary theme to your classroom lessons?  Monsters, bats, skeletons, pumpkins, and witches can be used to decorate a classroom, or spice up a worksheet or digital lesson.  Creative teachers make the month of October one of the most fun months of the school year.

Decorate your Classroom Door

Check out “One Creative Mommy”  a blog written by a retired teacher who loves sharing creative ideas for teachers.   She shares several pictures of really cool door decorations for Halloween.  Even is you’re not artistic, these fun door decorations can be easily created with the help of some of your talented students who love to help.   https://onecreativemommy.com/cool-classroom-door-decorations-for-halloween/

Add Halloween Decorations to your Classroom

Pinterest has some great examples of bulletin board decorations for the month of October.  Just search for “Halloween Math Bulletin Boards”  and you’ll find all kinds of creative ideas used by teachers and shared on Pinterest.  These are some of my favorites: “Don’t Let Math Scare You”,  “Candy Corn Calculations”, and “Thirteen Days of Spooky Math Challenges”.

Halloween Lessons

Are you teaching about scale?   How about a scale drawing activity to create a haunted house?  Or plotting points on a coordinate plane to create a Halloween picture?   If you’re multiplying fractions, have students create a witches brew for a party by multiplying fractional ingredients to make enough brew for a large party.  Include ingredients such as spider legs, bats wings, and spooky eyeballs.  Let students practice their algebraic equations with a Haunted House Escape Room https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Algebra-Escape-Room-Haunted-House-Theme-Digital-7238882  Convert fractions, decimals, and percentages with a Halloween-themed slide game.  https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Halloween-Slide-Game-FractionsDecimalsPercentages-7272221  Practice your multiplication facts with an interactive digital flashcard game https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Halloween-Multiplication-Flashcard-Game-7197239  or play Bingo:  Halloween themed Decimals Bingo https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Halloween-Decimals-Bingo-7121125Fractions Bingo https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Halloween-Simplifying-Fractions-Bingo-Digital-7125676, Integer Addition and Subtraction Bingo https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Halloween-Integer-Addition-and-Subtraction-Bingo-Digital-7223906 , Integer Multiplication Bingo , or practice Halloween puzzle pieces to practice integer operations https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Halloween-Integer-Addition-and-Subtraction-Puzzle-DigitalPrintable-7095787     https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Halloween-Integer-Multiplication-and-Division-Puzzle-DigitalPrintable-7095871   https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Halloween-Matching-Puzzle-Adding-and-Subtracting-Integers-Digital-6147537   (All Halloween-themed.)

Halloween Clip Art

Purchase some inexpensive Halloween clip art on Teachers Pay Teachers or Amped up Learning.  Add these to your worksheets and digital lessons to give a Halloween theme to any lesson.  Halloween is not just for elementary students.   Middle School and even High School students love it when you theme an otherwise dull lesson into something fun.

Online Games

Or practice any math concept on a site called Quizizz.com.   This fun competition can easily be played on student computers and has great graphics and Halloween music during the month of October.  Students log in and answer math questions on a topic of your choosing.  At the end of the game, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers are celebrated on screen.  Kids love to participate and watch as they compete to solve problems correctly.

Spice up your math classroom during the month of October.  It’s great fun for the kids and for their teacher too!  Find these Halloween Lessons/Games and much more:  https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Kellys-Math-Slides-And-More/Category/Halloween-482120
